Anyone who has ever lived next to wooded areas or large parks has probably encountered raccoon’s or other wildlife during their stay there. Raccoon’s, in particular, are renowned for making a mess out of trash cans and gardens. And once they’ve found a promising spot, they tend to make return trips, giving homeowners the continual hassle of cleaning up their mess. Many homeowners end up calling wildlife control, or go to their nearest supply store for a chemical solution. However, there are a number of inexpensive, and environmentally friendly ways to deal with these animals.
A simple raccoon repellent that you can make at home involves; Tabasco, Water, and a mild Dishwashing Detergent. Carefully mix one gallon of water, with a small bottle of Tabasco and one teaspoon of dishwashing detergent. Using a spray bottle, spray all the areas around your house that the raccoon’s are attracted to. The Tabasco acts as an irritant and repels the animals, the detergent helps the solution to cling to the plants and other places you spray. If you wish to make this solution more effective; try adding cayenne pepper and chili flakes. Be sure to respray this solution every three to five days for maximum effect.
Ammonia is also an extremely effective deterrent against these pests. It is best used in small spaces or areas without much airflow. Simply soak rags in the ammonia and then place them in the areas that the raccoon’s visit. Again, this is only effective in areas without much airflow. The pepper spray is much more effective for outside areas.
Using these repellents in addition to other techniques such as properly securing your garbage cans and other containers can save you thousands of dollars in pest removal fees. When used properly and consistently, you can sleep soundly at night, knowing you won’t be bothered by these curious critters.
